I'm very sorry the editing signups poll is being posted so late this week! Please forgive me contestants, just for fun writers, Jacques and Pip!
You may notice a slight change in the wording of the types of edits available. This has been done as they better reflect the types of edits our editors give, plus it hopefully makes choosing the type of edit you would like simpler. I hope I have done this correctly- there may be some refinements for week two, when I can get my head around this properly. :-)
Since I'm posting this so late, you will only have until 8am Sunday November 8 to sign up. Again, I'm very sorry I didn't get onto this sooner!

This is my Friday Entry, a bit late. This is a long and rambling post that begins with my weekend and ends in an apology for me being such a retard about Jake.
As all you guys know, I’m an air traffic controller. We work 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, so you can fly wherever you want, whenever you want, safely. After 19 years on the job, I’m finally senior enough to get weekends off. I just changed over from having Su/Mo off to having Sa/Su off a couple of weeks ago, in conjunction with my fall vacation. This is my second official weekend off at home. Last weekend my husband had to be away with family drama, so it didn’t count.

* This week in the Writer's Showcase:
So, I had a debate with my roommate the other day, and I found myself taking a side of the argument I never thought I'd take.
My roommate was commenting on a few laws that are in place that he thought were ridiculous. Among them was a law we have in the United States, and I imagine elsewhere, that says you have to wear your seat belt while driving, or you could be pulled over and given a $50 ticket. His reasoning: "Why should it be illegal? The only one at risk is me, and whose business is it of theirs what I do with my own life?"
That logic, I imagine, would apply to many other laws as well, such as smoking, drug use in the home, cliff diving in dangerous areas, suicide, and going to the park alone at night.
However, I present to you this thought: It is ABSOLUTELY their business. Why?
Because our governments _invest_ in us, and they support us, to some degree, when we can't.
Think if it this way: As an American citizen, I have been given about 12 years of formal education, paid for me by local and national governments. Five days a week, 180 days each year, the government made sure I was in a school building, where I was provided with textbooks, school materials, qualified educators, shelter, and supervision while my mom worked. If Mom couldn't have afforded to feed me, the school would have provided free or reduced-cost lunch. Meanwhile, soldiers, policemen, and firemen were in place to make sure that I was safe and protected in case of emergency. Once I was done with my 12 free years, I was granted a government-funded loan for another 6 years of college.
Now, I'm doing OK, and as a productive member of society, I can help others do the same by supporting the economy and paying my taxes. However, if I couldn't do so, then I would continue to be a financial drain on the system (please, NO disrespect intended here if any of the following applies to you. I'm just thinking about this logically). I would need food stamps, subsidized housing, possibly medical financial assistance. I may die without ever repaying my debts. Worst case scenario is that I need to use a homeless shelter.
It is in the best interest of the government to make sure that I am all of the following: Safe. Healthy. Capable. Successful. If I'm addicted to drugs, sick from cancerous cigarette smoke, crippled from a car accident, or engaged in anything else that would damage me and/or make me financially incapable of supporting myself, I become a drain - one that could collectively damage the way the world works.
So yes, if business is business, I think it's the government's financial business to make sure that they get the most out of the investment they've made with us.
Does the government have any right to mandate laws that stop you from potentially hurting yourself or engaging in unhealthy activities if no one else is placed in harm's way but you?
